Surfer SEO alternatives: what fits better, depending on why.

The short answer: The best Surfer alternative depends on why you’re switching. For an editor with a score like Surfer’s, but cheaper and with publishing and AI tracking on the entry plan, Frase starts at $49 a month. For pure content optimization in a team, Clearscope fits. If you don’t want to write yourself at all, pick Koala AI or SEO.ai, or hand off the work entirely to Claire, our own product. For AI visibility plus articles: Writesonic.

Why people switch

What users miss in Surfer. From their reviews.

1

Price

The most common complaint from freelancers and small teams, on G2 too. The entry plan costs €59 a month for 10 documents; WordPress and AI tracking start with Standard at €119.

2

Billing since May 2026

Since the change, Trustpilot users criticize prices, cancellation and expiring AI credits.

3

Rigid guidance

Fitting every term in means long rewrites; some users feel general AI tools can now do much of this.

4

Lots of manual work

Surfer only sends drafts to WordPress and has no schedule; an autonomous agent is only announced.

Details, ratings and sources: our Surfer review, Trustpilot: Surfer, as of Oct 8, 2026.

Criteria

What to look for. 4 questions for every alternative.

1

Do you need an editor?

Do you optimize your own posts term by term, or should finished articles come out?

2

How much do you do yourself?

Just getting guidance, or also having topics found and posts published?

3

What should be tracked?

Google only, or also whether ChatGPT and other AI engines mention your brand?

4

What’s the budget?

Surfer starts at €59 a month; the alternatives here range from $25 to €199.

Alternatives

8 alternatives to Surfer. Grouped by why you switch.

If you want an editor like Surfer, but cheaper and more automated

Frase

The most direct replacement: editor with a score, plus articles and publishing

Like Surfer, Frase scores your post against the top results as you write, with SEO, GEO and E-E-A-T scores. Unlike Surfer, Frase publishes to WordPress, Webflow, Sanity or Wix on its $49 Starter plan, by itself if you want, and tracks 50 prompts in ChatGPT and Google AI there. At Surfer, WordPress and AI tracking cost €119. Most Frase reviews still describe the old app, though.

Entry price (pricing page)
$49 a month ($39 billed annually), 10 articles; 7-day trial without a credit card
User ratings
G2 4.8 (308 reviews), Capterra 4.8 (335), Trustpilot 3.8 (64)

Strengths

  • Content editor with scores like Surfer, plus full articles and publishing
  • AI tracking and CMS publishing on the cheapest plan
  • Fact list before writing: the writer only uses facts you approve

Limits, and who’s better off elsewhere

  • Most reviews still describe the old app before the rebuild; Trustpilot is split (53% 5 stars, 36% 1 star)
  • Content calendar and team roles only from Professional ($129); per its terms, fees paid are non-refundable
  • If you publish to Shopify or need a German interface, Koala AI or Claire fit better

If your team mainly optimizes posts

For editorial teams that write themselves and need a clear checklist.

Clearscope

Content optimization for teams, unlimited users

Like Surfer, Clearscope is an editor with a grade: it shows which terms and questions the top results cover as you write and gives writers a clear checklist. Unlimited users are included from the entry plan, and Clearscope tracks whether ChatGPT and Gemini mention your brand. Full articles only come as a guided first draft, and publishing is up to you.

Entry price (pricing page)
$129 a month, 20 drafts, unlimited users; 14-day trial
User ratings
G2 4.9 (92 reviews), Capterra 4.9 (60)

Strengths

  • Editor with a grade and a keyword checklist, good for external writers
  • Unlimited users on every plan
  • Tracking in ChatGPT and Gemini (Query Tracking)

Limits, and who’s better off elsewhere

  • No CMS publishing and no schedule; only extensions for WordPress, Google Docs and Word
  • By its own account “not a standalone AI content generator”: full articles only as a guided first draft
  • Pricier than Surfer at entry level; if you want to optimize for less, look at Frase

If you don’t want to write yourself at all

Surfer gives you guidance and drafts. These tools find topics, write and publish, on a schedule if you want.

Koala AI

The cheapest way to finished articles

At $25 a month, Koala AI starts below Surfer, writes full articles with images and publishes to WordPress, Shopify, Webflow or Ghost, on autopilot from Boost ($99). From Professional ($49) there’s also an editor with an SEO score. AI tracking is limited to Google AI Overviews.

Entry price (pricing page)
$25 a month ($20 billed annually) for 45,000 words; 5,000 free words without a credit card
User ratings
Capterra 4.5 (70 reviews), Trustpilot 3.2 (22)

Strengths

  • Cheapest entry with CMS publishing, billed by words
  • Drafts for review or autopilot, set per brand
  • Trustpilot users mostly praise the article quality

Limits, and who’s better off elsewhere

  • No team management: according to the help center, a team shares one login
  • Many critical Trustpilot reviews are about credits, subscriptions and refunds
  • If you need to track ChatGPT and other AI engines, Writesonic does more

SEO.ai

SEO agent that publishes posts and pages on its own

SEO.ai works as an agent that finds gaps, writes posts and pages and publishes them automatically or after your review, plus backlinks and Google Ads campaigns. At $149 per website it costs more than Surfer, and its review base is thin and critical.

Entry price (pricing page)
$149 a month per website and language; 7-day trial
User ratings
Trustpilot 2.7 (21 reviews)

Strengths

  • Fully automatic if you want, review before going live if you prefer
  • Backlinks and Google Ads campaigns on the same plan
  • One price per website, with no word or article quota on the pricing page

Limits, and who’s better off elsewhere

  • Thin, critical review base; in 2025 and 2026 most Trustpilot reviews are about the trial and charges
  • No tracking in ChatGPT or other AI engines found
  • Several websites or languages are billed separately: $299 for three

If you want someone to take the work off your hands

Not a writing tool but an AI colleague: Claire does the work herself instead of just handing you texts.

Claire

Our product

AI colleague for visibility in ChatGPT and Google

Surfer gives you guidance for posts you write. Claire does the work herself: she finds where you’re missing on Google and in AI answers, closes the gaps with articles in your voice, publishes them after your approval or on autopilot and, from Growth, shows whether ChatGPT and Google AI mention you. She has no editor for optimizing posts yourself.

Entry price (pricing page)
€199 a month, about 30 articles; 3 articles free without a credit card
User ratings
We’re collecting independent reviews right now

Strengths

  • Does the work herself: finds gaps, closes them and shows you the results
  • Approval per post by default, autopilot only if you switch it on
  • Personal onboarding on every plan, articles in English or German

Limits, and who’s better off elsewhere

  • No editor for optimizing posts yourself term by term; Surfer or Frase fit that
  • No emails, ads or product copy; Jasper fits that

If you want AI visibility tracking plus articles

Writesonic

AI visibility tracking plus articles, in one plan

Writesonic tracks 50 prompts a day in ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews on its $99 Starter plan and writes 15 articles a month that you push to WordPress, Webflow, Ghost and more in one click. A term-by-term editor like Surfer’s isn’t its focus.

Entry price (pricing page)
$99 a month ($79 billed annually), 15 articles; 7-day trial without a credit card
User ratings
Capterra 4.8 (2,102 reviews), Trustpilot 4.6 (5,764)

Strengths

  • AI tracking and articles on every plan, no add-on
  • One-click publishing to several systems
  • Largest review base in this list, though many reviews describe the earlier writing tool

Limits, and who’s better off elsewhere

  • No autopilot: every post goes out with a click
  • Price, and features moved to pricier plans, are frequent complaints on Trustpilot
  • If you want approval-first publishing on a schedule, Koala AI or Claire do that

If you need copy for many channels

Jasper

Marketing teams with many channels, blog included

Jasper covers blog, campaigns, social and ads with more than 100 agents, from $69 a month for one user. For SEO, Surfer is more precise; Jasper only brings real keyword data with your own Semrush account.

Entry price (pricing page)
$69 a month ($59 billed annually), 1 user; 7-day trial with a credit card
User ratings
Capterra 4.8 (1,855 reviews), Trustpilot 3.3 (4,138)

Strengths

  • Many agents and templates for every marketing channel
  • Two brand voices on Pro already
  • Large review base on Capterra and G2

Limits, and who’s better off elsewhere

  • More than one user, AI tracking and Webflow publishing only on Business
  • Users name editing the output as the most common criticism
  • If you only want to fill the blog, Koala AI, Writesonic or Claire give you more for it

If you write for German-speaking markets

neuroflash

Copy of all kinds in German, blog included

neuroflash is the only writing tool here with a German interface and servers in Germany, and from Pro (€84) a WDF*IDF analysis by Seobility checks texts against the top results. It can’t publish to your CMS.

Entry price (pricing page)
€42 a month billed annually, excl. VAT; SEO blog workflow from Pro (€84)
User ratings
OMR Reviews 4.7 (932 reviews), Trustpilot 4.6 (1,666)

Strengths

  • German interface, servers in Germany, based in Hamburg
  • Users praise the German copy and the ease of use
  • Low entry price for copy of all kinds

Limits, and who’s better off elsewhere

  • You copy texts into your CMS yourself
  • Most common criticism in the reviews: generic phrasing
  • If you want posts published rather than pasted in, Claire or Koala AI fit better

OMR 4.7 (932)

Monthly prices from the vendors’ pricing pages, ratings as average with the number of reviews, as of October 8, 2026. G2 and Capterra values from the Google search result; both platforms block retrieval. Details and sources for each tool on our review pages and in our ranking.

To be honest

If you write yourself and mainly want a precise editor, Surfer remains one of the strongest options, with a large review base (G2 4.8 from 546, Capterra 4.9 from 422). The alternatives are worth it if the price is too high, if you don’t want to write yourself, or if publishing and AI tracking should come with the entry plan.

Questions

Good to know.

What is the best Surfer SEO alternative?

It depends on why you’re switching. As a direct replacement with an editor and a score, but cheaper and with publishing, Frase fits (from $49 a month). For content optimization in a team, Clearscope; for finished articles without writing yourself, Koala AI or SEO.ai; for AI visibility plus articles, Writesonic. To hand off the work entirely: Claire, our own product. As of October 8, 2026.

Is there a cheaper alternative to Surfer SEO?

Yes. Koala AI starts at $25 a month, Frase at $49 and neuroflash at €42 a month billed annually; Surfer starts at €59 (€49 billed annually). Of these, Frase in particular has an editor with a score like Surfer’s, and Koala AI from Professional ($49).

Is there a free alternative to Surfer SEO?

None of the alternatives here is free for good. Koala AI gives new accounts 5,000 free words without a credit card, Frase and Writesonic offer 7-day trials without a credit card, Clearscope a 14-day trial. With Claire, our own product, three articles are free.

Surfer or Frase?

Both have an editor that scores your post against the top results. Frase starts cheaper ($49 instead of €59), publishes to WordPress, Webflow, Sanity and Wix on the entry plan, by itself if you want, and tracks ChatGPT and Google AI there. Surfer has more reviews (G2 4.8 from 546 vs. 4.8 from 308) and tracks five AI engines daily from Pro.

Surfer or Clearscope?

Clearscope is also an editor with a grade; it starts at $129 a month and includes unlimited users. Surfer starts at €59, writes full articles with Surfer AI and sends them to WordPress as drafts. Clearscope only creates a guided first draft and doesn’t publish.

Which Surfer alternative publishes automatically?

Frase, Koala AI, SEO.ai and Claire can publish by themselves. Frase to WordPress, Webflow, Sanity and Wix, Koala to WordPress, Shopify, Webflow and Ghost, SEO.ai to WordPress, Shopify and others, Claire to WordPress, Webflow, Shopify and Shopware, after your approval by default.

How we compared

Method and sources, as of Oct 8, 2026

  • Researched on October 8, 2026 by Claire (wordsmattr GmbH, Vienna). Claire is our own product. She isn’t part of the ranking because she isn’t a writing tool; on the alternatives pages she’s labeled as our own product. Every score of the other tools comes with a reason.
  • Ranking: six criteria, 0 to 2 points each, all weighted the same. Features count on any plan with a public price, price counts on the entry plan. Tools with equal points share a place; within a place, the tool with more verified reviews comes first.
  • Alternatives: grouped by why you might switch, not by points. The reasons come from the reviews of the original that we read for our review pages.
  • Pricing and features: the vendors’ pricing, product, help and integration pages on the same day, retrieved from Germany. Prices change; the vendor’s page is binding.
  • Reviews: G2, Capterra, Trustpilot and OMR Reviews, a German software review platform. G2 and Capterra don’t allow automated retrieval; the average and count there come from the Google search result for the page. Many critical Trustpilot reviews are about subscriptions, cancellation and charges; we mention these topics but don’t quote them.
  • Not done: our own test with a trial account and a comparison of writing samples. We judge writing quality only through user reviews. We review the lists regularly, at least quarterly.
