What is agentic commerce? A practical guide for online stores.
In short: agentic commerce means AI agents search, compare and buy products on someone’s behalf, in ChatGPT, Google’s AI Mode, Copilot or Perplexity. Stores and agents talk through open protocols such as UCP (Google, Shopify and others) and ACP (OpenAI and Stripe), and payments run through schemes like AP2, Visa Intelligent Commerce or Mastercard Agent Pay. In the U.S., most of it is live: Shopify turns on agentic storefronts by default for eligible stores. What every store controls is clean product data, readable pages and content agents can cite.

Basics
What is agentic commerce? Shopping that an AI agent does for you.
Google describes AI agents as autonomous systems that perform tasks on behalf of people, such as booking a reservation or comparing product specifications. Agentic commerce applies that to shopping: the agent searches, compares, builds the cart and prepares the purchase. For payment, the protocols require the buyer’s approval, in AP2 for example as a mandate.
Three stages worth separating
Many articles lump them together. For your store they mean different things.
Discover
- What the agent does
- search, compare, recommend products
- Example
- product cards and shopping research in ChatGPT
Prepare
- What the agent does
- build the cart, trigger the purchase on the merchant site
- Example
- Google’s agentic checkout buys on the merchant’s website
Buy
- What the agent does
- complete payment in the chat, after approval
- Example
- Copilot Checkout, Perplexity Instant Buy, Google’s UCP-powered checkout

A real example: a Shopify store’s agent instructions
allbirds.com serves instructions for agents at /llms.txt. They explain how to search products, create a cart and prepare checkout, point to a dedicated Universal Commerce Protocol endpoint, and state that payment requires the buyer’s explicit approval. That’s what agentic commerce looks like from a store’s side today.

Guide: llms.txtProtocols
ACP vs UCP vs AP2 vs MCP: the standards behind agentic commerce.
Open protocols spare agents from having to understand every store separately. As a merchant you don’t implement them yourself; your platform or payment provider does. You should know what they stand for.
The protocols at a glance
All four are openly published. As of October 8, 2026.
ACP, Agentic Commerce Protocol

- Google with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart, Jan 11, 2026; Apache 2.0, current version 2026-08-25
- What for
- the whole journey from catalog and cart to checkout and orders. Shopify and Shopware support it.
AP2, Agent Payments Protocol
- Who, since when
- Google with 60+ partners, Sep 16, 2025; v0.2 since Apr 28, 2026
- What for
- agent-initiated payments, with mandates recording what the buyer approved
MCP, Model Context Protocol
- Who, since when
- Anthropic; since Dec 9, 2025 at the Agentic AI Foundation (Linux Foundation)
- What for
- general standard for connecting AI apps to external systems. ACP and UCP can run over it.

What are agentic payments?
Payments an agent initiates for the buyer. Visa (Intelligent Commerce, April 2025) and Mastercard (Agent Pay, April 2025) give agents their own limited payment credentials. PayPal launched “agent ready” for payments and “store sync” to make product data available to AI channels in October 2025.

A note on older articles
Many 2025 articles describe buying inside ChatGPT as the default. OpenAI scaled that back in March 2026; purchases happen on the merchant’s site again. Shopify replaced its old Storefront MCP catalog and cart tools with UCP, and WooCommerce 11.2 removes its experimental agentic checkout APIs.

How big is it?
Adobe measured a 693.4% jump in traffic from generative AI tools to U.S. retail sites in the 2025 holiday season, while stressing the user base is still modest. Shopify reports AI-referred orders grew nearly 13x in Q1 2026, but organic search still refers more sessions to Shopify merchants than all tracked AI platforms combined.

Store platforms
How Shopify agentic works, and what Shopware and WooCommerce offer.
Your store platform handles most of the technology. How far along it is varies a lot.
Shopify: on by default, tied to markets
Agentic storefronts are active by default for eligible stores, with no fees. With the default “Allow Shopify to manage for me”, Shopify enrolls your products in new AI channels automatically; you can manage it under Sales channels → Agentic. Every Shopify store automatically serves /agents.md, /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt, and Shopify’s storefront endpoint for agents uses UCP.
Channels depend on markets: ChatGPT and Copilot require selling to U.S. customers, Google also requires a U.S.-based business, Meta selling to the U.S., Canada or Mexico. Only direct-to-consumer sales qualify.

Shopware: “Agentic Commerce” extension in beta
The extension publishes a UCP profile at /.well-known/ucp, manages agents.md and llms.txt, and generates product feeds for OpenAI and Google. You switch capabilities such as catalog, cart, discounts, checkout and orders on individually. The MCP transport requires Shopware 6.7. Per Shopware, ChatGPT registration is currently U.S. only.
WooCommerce and others
WooCommerce says it is working with Stripe on ACP; its MCP server (since 10.3) is for store management, not selling to agents. We found no official merchant guide for AI channels.
Stripe’s Agentic Commerce Suite offers one integration for multiple agents, using UCP or ACP, and Stripe lists Wix, Etsy, WooCommerce, Squarespace and BigCommerce among platforms using it.

For your store
What a small store should do now: seven steps.
Our recommendation, based on the sources above: let your platform handle protocols and checkout, and put your effort into what every agent needs: readable pages, complete product data and answers to the questions customers ask before buying.
Seven steps for any store
The first five are one-off; the last two are ongoing.
- Allow AI crawlers, at least OAI-SearchBot and Googlebot, including at your CDN and in security plugins.
- Complete your product data: detailed descriptions, several images, variants, price, availability, genuine reviews.
- Fill in and link your terms, privacy and refund policies; Shopify requires them for AI channels.
- Keep Google Merchant Center clean; it’s the basis for products in AI Mode and for UCP checkout. For Copilot, set up Microsoft Merchant Center.
- Check what’s already running: on Shopify under Sales channels → Agentic, on Shopware via the Agentic Commerce extension.
- Publish buying guides that answer pre-purchase questions. ChatGPT’s shopping research reads public product pages and guides and cites its sources.
- Measure whether AI assistants mention your store for buying questions, and refine.

Claire for ShopifyQuestions
Good to know.
What is agentic commerce?
Shopping where an AI agent searches, compares, builds a cart and prepares or, after approval, completes the purchase on someone’s behalf, for example in ChatGPT, Google’s AI Mode, Copilot or Perplexity.
What is agentic shopping?
The consumer side of agentic commerce: you tell an AI assistant what you need, and it researches options, compares them and can complete the purchase with your approval.
What’s the difference between ACP and UCP?
ACP (Agentic Commerce Protocol) comes from OpenAI and Stripe; UCP (Universal Commerce Protocol) from Google with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart. Both connect agents and stores; UCP explicitly covers the whole shopping journey. Shopify and Shopware support UCP, while OpenAI uses ACP mainly for product data.
What are agentic payments?
Payments an agent initiates for the buyer, using schemes such as Google’s AP2, Visa Intelligent Commerce or Mastercard Agent Pay. They record what the buyer approved and limit what the agent may spend.
How does Shopify agentic work?
Shopify’s agentic storefronts are on by default for eligible stores and share your catalog with AI channels like ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Copilot and Meta. Eligibility depends on market: ChatGPT and Copilot require selling to U.S. customers, Google also a U.S.-based business.
Do I need to do anything as a Shopify merchant?
Not to turn it on. Check Sales channels → Agentic to see your channels and listing quality, complete your store policies, and improve descriptions, images, variants and reviews.
What does agentic commerce cost merchants?
Shopify lists no fees for agentic storefronts or selling on ChatGPT, and OpenAI charges no fees on purchases that start in ChatGPT. You still pay your usual payment processing and the effort to keep product data current.
What is /agents.md?
A file that tells AI agents how to interact with your store. Shopify serves it automatically for every store, with /llms.txt mirroring it; Shopware’s Agentic Commerce extension manages agents.md and llms.txt.
