Comparison · As of Oct 8, 2026

The best AI blog writers. Six tools, ranked in the open.

The short answer: If you want your blog to grow with AI without writing yourself, the tool has to do more than write: find topics, write full articles and publish them to your CMS. On those and three more criteria, Frase comes first with full points (12 of 12), ahead of Writesonic and Koala AI (10 each). If you write yourself and want to optimize every post, Surfer and Frase have the most precise editors.

Disclosure

Claire is our own product. She isn’t a writing tool but an AI colleague for visibility in ChatGPT and Google, so she isn’t part of the ranking; we introduce her separately below it. We score the other tools on open criteria, every point with a reason.

Criteria

How we rank. 6 criteria, 0 to 2 points each.

1

Finds topics

Whether the tool works out what you should write about and turns it into a plan.

  • 2 ptsFinds topics itself (keyword research or gap analysis) and schedules them
  • 1 ptResearch help without a plan, or data only via a second tool
  • 0 ptsNo topic research
2

Publishes to your CMS

Whether finished posts land on your website without copy and paste.

  • 2 ptsDirect integration with at least two common systems
  • 1 ptOne system only, only via Zapier or API, or only on an enterprise or beta plan
  • 0 ptsNo integration
3

Runs without you

Whether the blog keeps going when you’re busy: publishing on a schedule, automatically if you want.

  • 2 ptsPublishes on a schedule by itself if you want
  • 1 ptCalendar or a date per post, but you publish by hand
  • 0 ptsNeither
4

Tracks AI visibility

Whether the tool checks if ChatGPT and other AI search engines mention your brand.

  • 2 ptsAt least two AI engines, on a plan with a public price
  • 1 ptOne AI engine only, on demand only, on request only or as a separate package
  • 0 ptsNo tracking found
5

User reviews

Whether independent platforms back the tool up: G2, Capterra, Trustpilot or OMR Reviews.

  • 2 ptsAt least 100 reviews with an average of 4.5 or more on one platform
  • 1 ptReviews exist, but fewer or weaker
  • 0 ptsNo reviews
6

Entry price

What the cheapest plan costs a month, according to the pricing page. Dollars and euros count the same.

  • 2 ptsUp to $50 or €50 a month
  • 1 ptUp to $150 or €150
  • 0 ptsMore than $150 or €150

Ranking

The AI blog writers, ranked. Equal points share a place.

1

Frase

12 of 12 points

Topic to published post, with an editor and AI tracking from $49

Frase scores the most points because, since its 2026 rebuild, it covers every step at a low entry price: it finds topics from Search Console, competitor gaps and clusters, writes full articles in your brand voice, scores them for SEO, GEO and E-E-A-T, and publishes to WordPress, Webflow, Sanity or Wix, without you if you want. Even the Starter plan tracks 50 prompts in ChatGPT and Google AI. It gets full points on every criterion in this ranking.

Entry price (pricing page)
$49 a month ($39 billed annually), 10 articles; 7-day trial without a credit card
User ratings
G2 4.8 (308 reviews), Capterra 4.8 (335), Trustpilot 3.8 (64)

Strengths

  • Content editor with scores like Surfer, plus full articles and publishing
  • AI tracking and CMS publishing on the cheapest plan
  • Fact list before writing: the writer only uses facts you approve

Limits, and who’s better off elsewhere

  • Most reviews still describe the old app before the rebuild; Trustpilot is split (53% 5 stars, 36% 1 star)
  • Content calendar and team roles only from Professional ($129); per its terms, fees paid are non-refundable
  • If you publish to Shopify or need a German interface, Koala AI or Claire fit better
2

Writesonic

10 of 12 points

AI visibility tracking plus articles, in one plan

Writesonic tracks 50 prompts a day in ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews even on its entry plan, writes 15 articles a month and pushes them to WordPress, Webflow, Ghost and other systems in one click. It also has the largest review base in this list. It loses a point on scheduling because there’s no autopilot, and a point on price.

Entry price (pricing page)
$99 a month ($79 billed annually), 15 articles; 7-day trial without a credit card
User ratings
Capterra 4.8 (2,102 reviews), Trustpilot 4.6 (5,764)

Strengths

  • AI tracking and articles on every plan, no add-on
  • One-click publishing to several systems
  • Largest review base in this list, though many reviews describe the earlier writing tool

Limits, and who’s better off elsewhere

  • No autopilot: every post goes out with a click
  • Price, and features moved to pricier plans, are frequent complaints on Trustpilot
  • If you want approval-first publishing on a schedule, Koala AI or Claire do that
2

Koala AI

10 of 12 points

Most blog for the money, with an optional autopilot

Like Frase, Koala AI covers every step up to publishing, and it has the cheapest entry: an SEO agent suggests topics, KoalaWriter writes full articles with images, and from the Boost plan ($99) an autopilot publishes on schedule to WordPress, Shopify, Webflow or Ghost. It loses points on AI tracking (Google AI Overviews only, on demand) and on reviews (70 on Capterra).

Entry price (pricing page)
$25 a month ($20 billed annually) for 45,000 words; 5,000 free words without a credit card
User ratings
Capterra 4.5 (70 reviews), Trustpilot 3.2 (22)

Strengths

  • Cheapest entry with CMS publishing, billed by words
  • Drafts for review or autopilot, set per brand
  • Trustpilot users mostly praise the article quality

Limits, and who’s better off elsewhere

  • No team management: according to the help center, a team shares one login
  • Many critical Trustpilot reviews are about credits, subscriptions and refunds
  • If you need to track ChatGPT and other AI engines, Writesonic does more
4

Surfer

8 of 12 points

Write yourself and fine-tune every post for Google

Surfer is the most precise editor in this list: the Content Score shows which terms, headings and lengths the top-ranking pages have while you write, Surfer AI writes full articles from about 2,000 words, and from Standard Surfer tracks AI visibility. Its review base is large and strong. It loses points on publishing (WordPress only, as a draft) and scheduling (none).

Entry price (pricing page)
€59 a month (€49 billed annually), 10 documents; WordPress and AI tracking from Standard (€119)
User ratings
Capterra 4.9 (422 reviews), G2 4.8 (546)

Strengths

  • Content Editor with a score, the feature users praise most
  • AI tracking in five AI engines daily from Pro
  • Good for giving external writers clear SEO briefs

Limits, and who’s better off elsewhere

  • Without your own writing time, a lot stays undone: drafts to WordPress only, an autonomous agent is only announced
  • Price is the most common complaint from freelancers and small teams
  • If you don’t want to run the blog yourself, Koala AI, Writesonic or Claire fit better
4

SEO.ai

8 of 12 points

SEO agent that publishes posts and pages on its own

SEO.ai works as an agent: it finds gaps, creates a publishing plan, writes posts and pages and publishes them automatically or after your review, for example to WordPress or Shopify. Backlinks and Google Ads campaigns are included. It loses points on AI tracking, which we couldn’t find, and on reviews: 21 on Trustpilot averaging 2.7, with an unclaimed profile.

Entry price (pricing page)
$149 a month per website and language; 7-day trial
User ratings
Trustpilot 2.7 (21 reviews)

Strengths

  • Fully automatic if you want, review before going live if you prefer
  • Backlinks and Google Ads campaigns on the same plan
  • One price per website, with no word or article quota on the pricing page

Limits, and who’s better off elsewhere

  • Thin, critical review base; in 2025 and 2026 most Trustpilot reviews are about the trial and charges
  • No tracking in ChatGPT or other AI engines found
  • Several websites or languages are billed separately: $299 for three
6

Jasper

7 of 12 points

Marketing teams with many channels, blog included

Jasper bundles more than 100 AI agents for blog, campaigns, social and ads; the Blog Post agent writes full articles from Pro. For a blog that grows on its own, a few things are missing: real keyword data only with your own Semrush account, publishing only to Webflow, and AI tracking only on the Business plan with pricing on request. It gets full points for reviews.

Entry price (pricing page)
$69 a month ($59 billed annually), 1 user; 7-day trial with a credit card
User ratings
Capterra 4.8 (1,855 reviews), Trustpilot 3.3 (4,138)

Strengths

  • Many agents and templates for every marketing channel
  • Two brand voices on Pro already
  • Large review base on Capterra and G2

Limits, and who’s better off elsewhere

  • More than one user, AI tracking and Webflow publishing only on Business
  • Users name editing the output as the most common criticism
  • If you only want to fill the blog, Koala AI, Writesonic or Claire give you more for it

To be honest

Any ranking is a weighting. We count all six criteria the same; weigh them differently and you’ll get a different result. If you write yourself and want to optimize every post term by term, look at the editor first; in this list, Surfer and Frase are built around one. For emails, ads and social posts, Jasper fits better. And for the odd post, ChatGPT is often enough, even on the free plan.

Questions

Good to know.

What is the best AI blog writer?

For a blog that grows without you writing, Frase comes first in our ranking with 12 of 12 points: it finds topics, writes, publishes and tracks AI visibility from $49 a month. Writesonic and Koala AI follow with 10 points each. If you write yourself and want to optimize every post for Google, Surfer is a strong pick too. As of October 8, 2026.

Which AI tool writes blog posts and publishes them too?

Frase, Koala AI and SEO.ai can publish by themselves: Frase to WordPress, Webflow, Sanity and Wix, Koala to WordPress, Shopify, Webflow and Ghost, SEO.ai to WordPress, Shopify and others. Claire, our AI colleague for visibility in ChatGPT and Google, publishes after approval or on autopilot to WordPress, Webflow, Shopify and Shopware. Writesonic publishes in one click, Surfer sends drafts to WordPress, and Jasper publishes to Webflow only on the Business plan (beta).

Can I just use ChatGPT to write blog posts?

Yes, for individual posts. According to its pricing page, ChatGPT has a free plan, and it writes well if you say exactly what you want. Finding topics, optimizing against the competition on Google, adding images and publishing to your CMS is then up to you. That’s what the tools in this list take over, to different degrees.

Is there a free AI blog writer?

None of the tools in this list is free for good. Koala AI gives new accounts 5,000 free words without a credit card, and Frase and Writesonic offer 7-day trials without a credit card. Jasper and Surfer ask for payment details for their trials. With Claire, our own product, three articles are free, also without a credit card. As of October 8, 2026.

Which AI blog writer is best for small businesses?

That depends on how much time you have. With no time to write, pick a tool that finds topics and publishes: Koala AI is the cheapest from $25 a month, Frase adds AI visibility tracking from $49, and Writesonic tracks three AI engines from $99 a month. If you’d rather hand off the work entirely, Claire, our own product, is an AI colleague for visibility in ChatGPT and Google.

Does Google penalize AI-written blog posts?

Not for being AI-generated. Google says its focus is “on the quality of content, rather than how content is produced.” But according to Google, using generative AI tools to generate many pages without adding value for users may violate its spam policy on scaled content abuse. That’s why a review before publishing pays off, even with tools that have an autopilot.

Why isn’t Claire in the ranking?

Claire is our own product, and she isn’t a writing tool but an AI colleague for visibility in ChatGPT and Google: she finds where you’re missing, closes the gaps and shows you the results. Criteria for writing tools don’t rank her fairly, so we introduce her separately.

How we compared

Method and sources, as of Oct 8, 2026

  • Researched on October 8, 2026 by Claire (wordsmattr GmbH, Vienna). Claire is our own product. She isn’t part of the ranking because she isn’t a writing tool; on the alternatives pages she’s labeled as our own product. Every score of the other tools comes with a reason.
  • Ranking: six criteria, 0 to 2 points each, all weighted the same. Features count on any plan with a public price, price counts on the entry plan. Tools with equal points share a place; within a place, the tool with more verified reviews comes first.
  • Alternatives: grouped by why you might switch, not by points. The reasons come from the reviews of the original that we read for our review pages.
  • Pricing and features: the vendors’ pricing, product, help and integration pages on the same day, retrieved from Germany. Prices change; the vendor’s page is binding.
  • Reviews: G2, Capterra, Trustpilot and OMR Reviews, a German software review platform. G2 and Capterra don’t allow automated retrieval; the average and count there come from the Google search result for the page. Many critical Trustpilot reviews are about subscriptions, cancellation and charges; we mention these topics but don’t quote them.
  • Not done: our own test with a trial account and a comparison of writing samples. We judge writing quality only through user reviews. We review the lists regularly, at least quarterly.
