What the price covers

Five cost blocks. Not every quote includes all of them.

When you compare quotes, you often compare different things. SEO has five cost blocks, and every provider bundles a different mix.

01

Strategy and keyword research

Which searches are worth it, which pages are missing? Usually a one-off at the start, often bundled into onboarding or an initial campaign, like WebFX’s two-month start.

02

Technical SEO

Speed, indexing, redirects, site structure. Audits and fixes are often sold as projects: in the Ahrefs survey, the most common project fee for agencies is $2,501–$5,000. Someone with access to your site has to implement the fixes.

03

Content

New posts and updated pages. This is the block that comes back every month and grows with volume. Run it through the calculator above. How to split a full content marketing budget is in our guide to content marketing costs.

Guide to content marketing costs
04

Links and mentions

Other sites linking to or mentioning you matter for Google and for AI answers. Link building is often a separate line item, so ask whether it is included and what the budget is.

05

Reporting and tools

Rank tracking, reports, SEO software. Some plans include tool costs, others add them on top. Ask before you sign.

Who fits what

An honest comparison: when each route is the better one.

Cheaper is not automatically better. Each route is built for certain jobs, the expensive ones included.

01

An agency, when it is about more than content

A relaunch, technical issues, several countries, link building at scale or a market where every position is fought over: that takes people with access to your site and time to coordinate. It costs money, and it pays off when a customer is worth a lot to you.

02

A freelancer or consultant, when you want one person to talk to

For an audit, a clearly scoped fix or ongoing support a few hours a month. In the Ahrefs survey freelancers average $72 an hour against $99 for agencies. Plan for who takes over when they are booked out or on vacation.

03

A content platform, when you need many similar pieces

Product descriptions for hundreds of items, category copy, standard pages from a clear template: per piece, hard to beat. Briefing, review and publishing stay with you.

04

AI with your approval, when posts should go out every week

Claire fits when your blog should grow every week and nobody on your team has time to find topics and write briefs. You read and approve, or Claire publishes on her own. What Claire does not do: technical work on your site, product or category copy.

Common pitfalls

Six pitfalls when buying SEO, and how to avoid them.

Expensive mistakes rarely happen at the price. They happen in the fine print.

01

Prices without scope

A $1,000 plan and a $3,000 plan differ in more than price. Get in writing how many posts, links and hours are included, and what is not.

02

Long commitments

SEO takes months, that is true, and six-month commitments are common: WebFX asks for one. Ask what happens if agreed milestones are missed, and whether you can leave after the first term.

03

Ranking guarantees

Google itself says: “No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.” Anyone promising the top spot is promising something they do not control.

04

Looking only at the per-word price

A $30 post is cheap once it is finished. If you set the topic, keyword and outline, then review, edit and publish, add your own time. Orbit Media measures 3 hours 20 minutes just to write one post.

05

Unclear ownership

Settle before you sign whether content, accounts and data stay with you when you cancel. Content on your own domain and in your own CMS cannot be taken away.

06

Platform fees and tools on top

Per-word prices rarely tell the whole story. Verblio adds a $49.50 monthly platform fee to its hybrid content, WriterAccess starts at $49 a month before any content. Tool licenses and link budgets can come on top of agency retainers.

Questions

Good to know.

How much does SEO cost per month?

The most common retainer is $501 to $1,000 a month, and agencies average $3,209 (Ahrefs, 439 providers). Among the mostly small agencies in the SE Ranking survey, 64% charge under $1,000. Large agencies cost more: WebFX lists $2,800 to $9,200 a month after a two-month start. If you mainly need regular content, AI with your approval such as Claire costs €199 to €299 a month.

How much does SEO cost per hour?

The average in the Ahrefs survey is $111 an hour; 47% of providers charge $75 to $200 and 90% charge $150 or less. Consultants average $171, agencies $99, freelancers $72. In the SE Ranking survey, 40% of U.S. and Canadian agencies charge more than $125 an hour.

How much does a blog post cost?

For 1,300 words: $30 to $117 on Textbroker depending on quality level, $78 (hybrid) or $208 (human-only) on Verblio, and $325 to $585 with a freelance writer at the EFA 2026 median range of 25 to 45 cents per word. Claire includes up to 30 posts a month from €199.

Why is SEO so expensive?

Because most of it is skilled hours, and it runs for months: research, technical fixes, writing and outreach. At $111 an hour, the average rate in the Ahrefs survey, ten hours a month already cost $1,110.

Is it worth paying for SEO?

It depends on what a customer is worth to you and how long you can wait, because SEO builds up slowly. Ask any provider for measurable goals and a scope in writing. Be careful with guarantees: Google says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking.

Can I do SEO myself?

Much of it, yes. Google Search Console and Google’s SEO Starter Guide are free. The real cost is time: writing a single blog post takes 3 hours 20 minutes on average, according to Orbit Media. A one-off audit often makes sense for the technical side, while content can be written in-house or handed off.

Does Google penalize AI content?

Not for being written with AI. Google says: “Appropriate use of AI or automation is not against our guidelines.” Generating content primarily to manipulate rankings is. What counts is whether the content is helpful (Google Search Central Blog, February 8, 2023).
