ChatGPT shopping: how your products get listed.

In short: when a question signals shopping intent, ChatGPT shows product cards with images, prices and links to stores. According to OpenAI, the picks aren’t paid; they depend on relevance, price, availability and reviews. Merchants get in through web search, automatically through Shopify or Etsy, or with their own product feed. Merchant shopping is live in the U.S. Since March 2026, purchases happen on the merchant’s own site again, not in a native ChatGPT checkout.

Basics

How does ChatGPT shopping work? Product cards in the answer, picked by relevance.

When a question suggests shopping intent, ChatGPT can show product options with imagery, details and links to sites where you can learn more or buy. OpenAI says hundreds of millions of people use ChatGPT to find, understand and compare products.

01

How ChatGPT picks products

ChatGPT ranks by relevance to the user’s intent and may consider available options, price, reviews, ease of use and the user’s own context. The data comes from structured metadata such as price and description from first- and third-party providers, plus other third-party content.

When several merchants sell the same item, they’re ranked by availability, price, quality and whether they are the maker or primary seller. ChatGPT writes its own simplified titles, labels like “budget-friendly” and review summaries; OpenAI doesn’t verify reviews.

02

Shopping research: the buying-guide mode

Since November 2025, ChatGPT can research a purchase in several steps and deliver a personal buyer’s guide. OpenAI says results are organic: it reads public product pages directly, cites sources and avoids low-quality sites. Retailers that block automated access get skipped or replaced with other sources.

What changed in 2026

In March 2026 shopping became more visual, with side-by-side comparison and image search, for Free, Go, Plus and Pro users. Since October 1, 2026, clothing and accessories have a virtual “Try on” button, and users can save products to their library.

For merchants

How to get your products on ChatGPT shopping: three routes.

You don’t strictly need a feed: if ChatGPT can crawl your site, your products can appear anyway. A feed, OpenAI says, gives you more control over how they appear.

01

The three routes compared

As OpenAI and Shopify describe them, as of October 8, 2026.

Web search

What you do
allow OAI-SearchBot; keep product pages with price, availability and description publicly readable
Limits
no control over presentation, no guarantee

Shopify or Etsy

What you do
nothing; the catalog is integrated via Shopify Catalog or Etsy
Limits
on Shopify, only if you sell to U.S. customers

Your own product feed

What you do
apply at chatgpt.com/merchants, deliver a feed once approved
Limits
waitlist, approved partners only, feeds target the U.S.

02

Web search: the route open to everyone

Sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot won’t appear in ChatGPT search answers, only as navigational links. robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to apply. GPTBot, the training crawler, can be blocked separately.

What a ChatGPT product feed needs

OpenAI currently accepts feeds from approved partners only. Nine fields are required: item ID, title, description, URL, brand, seller name, image URL, availability and price. Feeds go via SFTP, preferably as Parquet, at least daily, with intraday updates via API. A Google-compatible format works only after OpenAI confirms it for your feed. Feeds can also come through providers such as Salesforce and Stripe.

Prohibited products include alcohol, nicotine, gambling, weapons and prescription-only medication. OpenAI aims to launch a self-service merchant portal “later this year”.

04

Shopify: what Shopify requires

For the ChatGPT channel, your Terms of service, Privacy policy and Return and refund policy must be completed, and legal disclosures belong in the first 6,000 characters of product descriptions. Under Sales channels → Agentic, Shopify shows how complete your descriptions, images, verified reviews, variants and policies are.

Note: blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt only affects open-web discovery; it doesn’t stop Shopify Catalog from sharing your product data.

Instant Checkout

What happened to ChatGPT Instant Checkout? Purchases moved back to the merchant.

OpenAI launched buying inside the chat in September 2025. In March 2026 it changed course: merchants use their own checkout again while OpenAI focuses on product discovery. Many articles still describe the old setup.

01

Timeline

Every step with its source.

DateWhat happened
Sep 29, 2025Instant Checkout launches: U.S. users buy from U.S. Etsy sellers in chat, single items only. Merchants pay a “small fee”, amount not disclosed.
Nov 20, 2025Rolled out to Shopify merchants, still U.S. only.
Mar 24, 2026OpenAI: the first version didn’t offer enough flexibility; merchants may use their own checkout.
Oct 2026No standalone Instant Checkout; purchases complete on merchant sites or apps. No fees on purchases that start in ChatGPT.
OpenAI’s shopping help (Oct 3, 2026) still mentions an Instant Checkout option for “some” products and merchants; no end date is given.

02

Who stays the seller

The merchant remains the merchant of record, not OpenAI or the payment providers. On Shopify, shoppers complete checkout in an in-app browser in ChatGPT, or in a new tab on the web. Merchants wanting deeper integration can build a ChatGPT app.

Checklist

How to get recommended by ChatGPT shopping: a checklist for your store.

Our recommendation, based on the sources above: make sure ChatGPT can read and cite your store through web search, keep product data clean enough that a feed is a formality, and answer your customers’ buying questions with your own guides, because shopping research reads them directly.

01

For every store

These apply regardless of platform.

  1. Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and at your CDN. Block GPTBot separately if you don’t want training.
  2. Keep price, availability, variants, description and reviews readable in the HTML, not only after JavaScript runs.
  3. Publish complete, linked terms, privacy and return policies.
  4. Write buying guides for the questions customers ask before they buy, with your own experience and numbers.
  5. Collect genuine, traceable reviews.

02

By platform

Shopify: check Sales channels → Agentic to see which AI channels are active and how complete your product data is. The ChatGPT channel requires selling to U.S. customers; your business can be based elsewhere.

Other platforms: apply at chatgpt.com/merchants and join the waitlist, or deliver feeds through a provider OpenAI supports.

03

How big is the channel?

Shopify reports AI-referred orders grew nearly 13x year over year in Q1 2026. Organic search still refers more sessions to Shopify merchants than all tracked AI platforms combined. AI shopping is growing fast, but it doesn’t replace search yet.

Questions

Good to know.

Can you use ChatGPT for shopping?

Yes. For shopping questions ChatGPT shows product cards with images, prices, details and store links, and its shopping research mode reads several sites and builds a personal buyer’s guide. Purchases now usually complete on the merchant’s own site.

How do I get my products on ChatGPT shopping?

Three ways: through web search, if OAI-SearchBot may read your site; automatically via Shopify or Etsy; or with your own product feed after applying at chatgpt.com/merchants. The feed route is currently open to approved partners only.

Do I need a product feed for ChatGPT?

No. OpenAI says products can appear if ChatGPT crawls your site. A feed gives you more control over how your products are shown.

Is ChatGPT Instant Checkout still available?

Mostly not. It launched in the U.S. in September 2025, and in March 2026 OpenAI moved to letting merchants use their own checkout. OpenAI’s help still mentions an option for some products and merchants, without an end date.

Does ChatGPT shopping charge merchants fees?

No. OpenAI says there are no fees on purchases that start in ChatGPT. Under the earlier Instant Checkout, merchants paid an undisclosed “small fee”. Paid ChatGPT ads are a separate program.

Can I pay for better placement in ChatGPT shopping?

No. OpenAI says product results are selected independently, are not ads and aren’t influenced by partnerships. You can only pay for labeled ads below the answer.

What products are available in ChatGPT shopping?

Anything ChatGPT can find through web search, Shopify Catalog, Etsy or approved feeds, except prohibited categories such as alcohol, nicotine, gambling, weapons and prescription-only medication.

How do I connect Shopify to ChatGPT?

You don’t need to: Shopify catalogs are integrated via Shopify Catalog, and agentic storefronts are on by default for eligible stores. To qualify for the ChatGPT channel, you must sell to U.S. customers and have your terms, privacy and refund policies completed.
