Surfer SEO review: pricing, user ratings & alternatives
The short answer: Surfer is an SEO editor: it compares your text with the top-ranking pages on Google and uses a Content Score to show which terms, headings and lengths are missing. Surfer AI also writes full articles, and an AI Tracker measures whether ChatGPT and other AI search engines mention your brand. Surfer is now part of the French Positive Group and appears as “Positive Surfer”. It’s rated 4.8 out of 5 on G2 (546 reviews) and 4.9 on Capterra (422). Users praise the Content Editor and criticize the price.

Features
What Surfer does.
The core is the Content Editor. It analyzes the top-ranking pages for your keyword and gives you terms, headings and length; the Content Score shows how close you are while you write. Since May 2026, the score is also meant to reflect how well a text works for AI search. Based on that, Surfer AI writes full articles from about 2,000 words, with images and links, and the Surfy assistant rephrases, shortens or expands.
On top come keyword research, a topical map for content clusters, a content audit of existing pages and the AI Tracker for AI visibility. Surfer has been part of the French Positive Group since fall 2025; the contracting party is Surfer Sp. z o.o. in Wrocław, Poland. By its own account, Surfer has more than 150,000 customers.

Reviews
What users say. Ratings from four platforms.
Most Surfer reviews are on G2 (546) and Capterra (422); we couldn’t read the texts there. We did read 40 reviews on Trustpilot and the 8 on the German platform OMR Reviews, mostly from 2022 and 2023. Many describe the Content Editor before the repositioning; critical reviews from 2026 are mostly about prices and billing after the change in May.

What users like
- Content Editor: real-time score and concrete guidance on terms and structure, the most frequently praised feature.
- Easy to use, also for briefing external writers.
- Content planning with the topical map and internal links, regular new features.
What users criticize
- Price: high for freelancers and small teams; a recurring theme on G2 too.
- Billing: after the change in May 2026, Trustpilot users criticize prices, cancellation and expiring AI credits.
- Rigid guidance: fitting every term in means long rewrites; some users feel general AI tools can now do much of this.
- AI tracking is still young.
In their words
“The Content Editor is the standout, it makes it much easier to structure content, identify gaps, and optimise without guessing.”
Trustpilot
“AI tracking still doesn’t make full sense, but since we’ve been using them for quite some time now, I’m sure they’ll up their game in no time.”
Trustpilot
“Surfer makes briefing external writers super easy.”
OMR Reviews
“The service isn’t particularly cheap, which makes it hard for freelancers in particular to really use it.”

Who it’s for
Who Surfer is a good fit for. And who it isn’t.
A good fit for
- SEO writers, editorial teams and agencies who write themselves and want to optimize every text for Google.
- Teams that want to give external writers clear SEO briefs.
- Anyone who wants optimization and AI visibility tracking in one tool (from Pro).
Less of a fit for
- Anyone without time to write and publish themselves: Surfer provides guidance and drafts, WordPress gets a draft, and an agent that publishes on its own is only announced.
- Freelancers on a small budget: the entry plan costs €59 a month for 10 documents, and AI tracking and WordPress start at €119.
Claire fits if you don’t want to optimize articles yourself but have them published for you: Claire finds topics, writes, publishes after your approval and, on Growth, tracks ChatGPT and Google AI. If you write yourself and want to align every text with Google term by term, Surfer’s Content Editor is the more precise tool.

Questions
Good to know.
What is Surfer SEO?
A tool for optimizing content for Google: the Content Editor compares your text with the top-ranking pages and suggests terms, headings and length. Surfer AI also writes full articles, and the AI Tracker measures whether AI search engines like ChatGPT mention your brand.
How much does Surfer SEO cost per month?
According to the pricing page (as of October 8, 2026, shown in euros from Europe), Discovery costs €59 a month (€49 billed annually) for 10 documents, Standard €119 (€99), Pro €219 (€182) and Peace of Mind €359 (€299), excluding VAT. AI tracking alone starts at €95 a month. Surfer also bills in US dollars.
Is Surfer SEO free?
No. You can try the Pro plan for 7 days, but you enter payment details and the subscription continues automatically afterwards. There’s no free plan.
What is Positive Surfer?
Surfer’s current name. Surfer has been part of the French Positive Group since fall 2025 and now appears as “Positive Surfer”, an “AI Visibility Platform”. The Content Editor and Surfer AI are still part of it.
Is Surfer SEO good?
For people who write regularly and optimize their own texts, users say yes: they mostly praise the Content Editor, and Surfer is rated 4.8 out of 5 on G2 (546 reviews) and 4.9 on Capterra (422), as of October 8, 2026. The most common criticism is the price, especially for freelancers with only a few texts a month.
What are the best Surfer SEO alternatives?
Writesonic if AI visibility tracking and articles should come in one plan, Jasper for marketing teams, and neuroflash for German-language copy with SEO analysis. If you want finished articles published rather than optimizing them yourself, Claire, Koala AI and SEO.ai find topics, write and publish.
How we compared
Method and sources, as of Oct 8, 2026
- Compiled on October 8, 2026 by Claire (wordsmattr GmbH, Vienna). Claire writes articles itself and is therefore not neutral. That’s why every number comes with its source and date, and we also say where other tools fit better.
- Ratings: G2, Capterra, Trustpilot and OMR Reviews (a German software review platform). G2 and Capterra don’t allow automated retrieval. Averages and counts there come from the Google search result for each page; we haven’t read individual reviews there. Strengths and weaknesses rely on the texts on OMR Reviews and Trustpilot.
- Several of these tools repositioned in 2025 and 2026. Many reviews therefore describe an earlier version of the product; where that’s the case, we say so. OMR Reviews labels reviews written after an invitation with a voucher or donation. That says nothing about individual texts, but it can raise the average.
- On Trustpilot, many critical reviews are about subscriptions, cancellation and charges. We mention these topics, but we don’t quote them.
- Reddit: direct retrieval is blocked. We only show the snippets Google Search displays and label them as snippets.
- Prices and features: the vendors’ pricing, product and help pages, retrieved from Europe on the same day. Some vendors show euros or dollars depending on your location. Whether a tool writes full articles, finds topics, publishes to a CMS or tracks AI visibility, we checked on product, integration and help pages. Prices change; the vendor’s own page is binding.
- Quotes: verbatim and shortened, with role, rating and date, without names. Quotes from German-language reviews are our translation and marked as such.
- Not done: our own hands-on test with a trial account, or a comparison of writing samples. Claire itself doesn’t have a profile with reviews on these platforms yet. We review this comparison regularly, at least quarterly.
